Crisona held office in New York State as a state legislator, borough president and judge. Crisona was born on August 30, 1907 in Brooklyn. After graduating from New York University School of Law, he joined the Manhattan law firm Crisona Brothers. He worked there from 1945 to 1957, during which time he lived in Queens. During some of these years, he also worked as a lawyer in the railroad industry.

In January 1946, Crisona became a member of the New York State Assembly. The Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature, i.e. the legislative body. The Assembly consists of 150 members who are elected for a 2-year term. They have no term limits. In November of the same year, Crisona ran for re-election but lost the election.

In 1955-1957, Crisona became a member of the New York State Senate, the upper house of the New York Legislature. Senators are elected for 2 years and have no limitations on the number of terms of service. The number of seats in the Senate is not constant and is regulated by the State Constitution. Senators, like members of the Assembly, sit in the Capitol.

Perhaps Crisona’s main achievement as a senator was the transfer of control over John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in Queens to the Port Authority. By the way, John F. Kennedy International Airport is the main public international airport in NYC, the busiest international airport in the United States and the main air cargo gateway of the country in terms of cargo traffic. LaGuardia is considered the best medium-sized air harbor in the United States.

Borough President

In 1958, Democrat Crisona replaced Republican James A. Lundy as president of Queens. The then Democratic leader, James A. Phillips, accused Crisona of offering bribes during the election. However, he was cleared of all charges. Soon he was also elected leader of the Queens Democratic Party. Crisona served as president for only a year, after which he resigned to work in court.

He was succeeded by John T. Clancy. In 1955, Clancy failed to run for president of the borough. When Crisona left office, Clancy was charged with completing his term. In 1961, he was re-elected, and a year later the president resigned.

In general, borough presidents advise the mayor of NYC, express opinions on land use, inform the boroughs’ needs when allocating the city budget, appoint some officials and members of the community board and so on. They defend the interests of their communities before mayoral agencies, the City Council, the state government, public corporations and private enterprises.

Career in law

From 1958 to 1976, Crisona served on the New York State Supreme Court. It is a court of first instance with unlimited civil and criminal jurisdiction. In many counties outside of NYC, the court primarily handles civil cases. Interestingly, New York is the only state where the Supreme Court is a court of first instance rather than last resort. It serves as a large tribunal of general jurisdiction in the state. Its history dates back to 1691, making it one of the oldest courts in the United States.

He returned to private law practice in 1976. The lawyer also worked on the boards of monetary and investment funds.
