As a child, the girl planned to become a teacher. Meng received her bachelor&#8217;s degree from the University of Michigan and her Juris doctorate from Yeshiva University&#8217;s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. After her studies, the woman worked as a lawyer, defending public interests. Growing up in the most diverse borough in the United States, she understood that all people deserve equal rights and opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2004, Jimmy Meng, Grace&#8217;s father, became a member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 22nd District. He was the first Asian-American elected to the state legislature. After his first term, he was arrested for mail fraud. By the way, the New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature. The upper chamber is the Senate. The Assembly consists of 150 members who are elected for a term of 2 years. They do not have a limit on the number of terms. However, her candidacy was pulled from the ballot when her Democratic opponents challenged the Queens native&#8217;s residency status. In 2008, Grace Meng, having already resolved her residency issues, ran again and won. In 2010, she was re-elected to the position until 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, Meng created the landmark Reverse Mortgage Act. It prohibited income received from reverse mortgages from being considered income. With the help of this law, pensioners received a partial exemption from property tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The legislator of the country<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having achieved considerable success in the state, the politician decided to test her strength at the national level. In 2013, she became a member of the US House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Congress, the federal legislative body. The upper house of Congress is the Senate. During the elections, the politician promised to focus on creating jobs, improving transport and developing tourism opportunities in the represented district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace Meng represents New York&#8217;s 6th Congressional District, which covers Queens. She became the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress from the state of New York. In Congress, Grace also serves on the Committee on Appropriations and the Subcommittees on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs, Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, the legislator introduced a bill aimed at prohibiting the desecration of cemeteries and recognizing such actions as a violation of the right to religious freedom. Meng tried to combat religiously motivated vandalism in cemeteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015, the lawmaker opposed the nuclear deal with Iran. Two years later, she boycotted the inauguration of Donald Trump. In addition, in 2017, she became the vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee in Atlanta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, Meng reintroduced legislation aimed at improving the educational attainment of graduates from under-resourced public colleges. With the help of her program, universities received the necessary funding to support students from low-income families and minorities. This had the effect of increasing the number of graduates by at least two times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hate crimes against Asian-Americans have increased in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, the politician presented a resolution that condemned all forms of anti-Asian sentiment. In 2023, she was one of the Democrats who voted for the document that ordered President Joe Biden to withdraw American troops from Syria. In 2024, she voted to provide additional military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the Queens native has influenced the passage of many important pieces of legislation. They have had a positive impact on the lives of voters, from improving freedom of religion to protecting residents of public buildings from insufficient heat, providing Internet access to students across the country and more. She also achieved the state&#8217;s provision of assistance to veterans and military personnel and influenced the improvement of consumer and children&#8217;s rights protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislator founded the first bipartisan Kids&#8217; Safety Caucus, which deals with children&#8217;s safety issues. She co-founded the Quiet Skies Caucus, which works to reduce excessive aircraft noise that negatively impacts communities.
