Harvey received his secondary education in his native Ireland, at Coleraine College. This institution prepares students for university by focusing on developing partnership and teamwork skills.

After his studies, Harvey returned to the United States, where he got a job as a photojournalist for army and navy magazines. A little later, he began publishing his father’s magazine. In 1917, he was promoted to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army. During World War I, Harvey commanded an infantry brigade.

Political career

After the war, Harvey returned to Queens, where he had previously lived. In 1921, as a Republican, he became a member of the Queens Board of Aldermen and served 4 terms. In 1928, Harvey helped investigate the Maurice E. Connolly case. In addition, Harvey did a lot to organize the 1939 World’s Fair (Expo). It was an international fair that became a symbol of industrialization and an open platform for different countries to demonstrate their technical and technological achievements. Flushing Meadows Corona Park was created specifically for the Expo.

In 1939, the park hosted the largest international exhibition ever held in the United States. Back then, technological innovations and visions of the future were demonstrated here. On the occasion of this event, as many as 10,000 trees were planted on the territory! After the exhibition, the park was transformed into a public green space. It is a popular venue for social and cultural events.

Local residents and tourists are attracted by the local sports grounds, lakes, museums, theater, etc. In 1964, the park hosted the second World Exhibition. It was then that the famous steel model of the globe Unisphere, the New York State Pavilion, the New York Hall of Science museum, the botanical garden, Shea Stadium, etc. appeared here.

In 1941, Harvey ran for a fourth term but lost the election to Democrat James A. Burke. He focused on transportation and tax issues. Burke served two terms in office and then resigned. In general, borough presidents are tasked with advising the mayor of NYC, expressing opinions on land use, informing the boroughs about the needs of the city budget, appointing some officials and members of the public council, etc. Presidents are obliged to protect the interests of their communities before mayoral agencies, city council, state government, public corporations and private enterprises.

George Harvey died in 1946 while fighting a fire near his home in Connecticut. To honor his memory, Harvey Park was named in honor of the politician in Whitestone, Queens. It is a place where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax in the lap of nature. The park is known for its hockey rink and playground. The space is also ideal for competitions between local amateur sports teams.

George U.
