The search began after the disappearance of 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert, who worked as an escort, like many of the other victims. On the morning of May 1, 2010, Gilbert called 911. She told the operator that someone was chasing her. She ran away, saying that someone was trying to kill her. After that, the woman disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2010, police found the human remains near Gilgo Beach. They were Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy. However, Gilbert&#8217;s body was not among them. The victims found were nicknamed the Gilgo Beach Four by the media. All the women were young (under 30 years old), tiny and slender. By May 2011, police had found 6 more bodies in the area, bringing the total number of victims to 10. One of them was a little girl. Investigators thought that different people were involved in the murders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.queensyes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/ad_4nxflylycwx0ubmfgpnqcojowrdc42gfczd__h2pezbfx0mrzvd5gg8zj9exeyoylhso4dx0gn607gdvf_p-gk1vndj1otpidveyhuxgblmq2j5u0iltlqcuxbptzzbb-8kgtfapmuouchy-rl3bn8cnxhv98keyxac8aoxbqae7pcvpkwcfipf1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A year and a half after Gilbert disappeared, police finally found her belongings. In a swamp eight miles from Gilgo Beach, officers found Gilbert\u2019s purse, cell phone, shoes and jeans. A week later, her skeleton was found about a quarter of a mile from those items. Investigators said she died from hypothermia or drowning. Years later, Suffolk County Police released the full audio recording of Shannan\u2019s 21-minute 911 call the day she disappeared. After listening to it, police concluded that she had likely run away from a client and drowned in the swamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_is_the_suspect\"><\/span>Who is the suspect?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The media speculated about the killer, whom police called Joe C. The New York Times described the possible killer as a white man between the ages of 20 and 45 who was familiar with the southern shore of Long Island and had access to bags to store bodies for disposal. The newspaper also warned that he may have detailed knowledge of law enforcement methods and may even have relation to them. The investigation suggested that there may be several killers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation intensified in February 2022 when Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison and Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney formed a new task force. Within 6 weeks, they had identified the main suspect, Rex Heuermann, an architect and resident of Massapequa Park, Long Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.queensyes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/ad_4nxen8yjs1hxje9s85diduezb-7bnjlyqmtzkza0njjrd4lxgfum5qs6-82ly3owvycgmzfe_t-f-cxdhck6vnqakn5hoa42x_pemcwyrvxkt6wjg-bfeysrpein6ro6ilvcrkdoe-k1fppbtzjrioird1hkeyxac8aoxbqae7pcvpkwcfipf1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A neighbor of one of the victims, Amber Costello, told police about a client who had been visiting the woman before she disappeared. He arrived in a Chevrolet Avalanche, the same as Rex Heuermann\u2019s. The police carefully analyzed the case files they had previously obtained. With the help of the FBI, law enforcement officers established that most of the calls between the killer and the victims took place in the area of \u200b\u200b\u200b\u200bcell towers in Massapequa Park, where he lived. It was also found that several of his cell phones were used to communicate with some of the victims. The email address associated with these phones was repeatedly utilized to search the Internet for information related to sex workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 19, 2023, law enforcement officers noticed Rex at a cell phone store in midtown Manhattan. The police began to follow the suspect. When he threw a pizza box into the trash can, they took it for examination. DNA on the pizza crust was found to match the one from the hair found on the victims\u2019 bodies. Police arrested the alleged killer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police spent 12 days searching his home, retrieving weapons from the basement and digging through items in the backyard. Data recovery from hard drives and other devices revealed that the man had a vast collection of videos of violence, bondage and torture. Prosecutors also uncovered a possible crime plan after recovering a deleted document from a hard drive found in the architect\u2019s basement. It outlined the steps the suspect planned to take before, during and after the murders. It was one of more than 350 devices that were found. In June 2024, the man was formally charged with the murders of six women. All of them worked as escorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_decent_family_man_or_a_psychopath\"><\/span>A decent family man or a psychopath?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It turned out that Rex was married at the time of his arrest, raising a daughter and stepson. In the summer, he took his family to Iceland. When he stayed alone at home, he probably used this time to kill. The architect lived in his childhood place, a dilapidated one-story house with faded red paint and an unkempt yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.queensyes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/ad_4nxcho4koqhf1lw_gj3n5ssgv7f3nuc4eicqsmxkoswfgje_as_jtru-5ay_dgnd_bjcxbkacl5anc6povcayzsg853hchyza-cza-1cyiwtn7u2wwsjyvp8ycnxjvqn2box8bqyqkscc99fcdanqoc0yppivkeyxac8aoxbqae7pcvpkwcfipf1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Maureen Holpit, who attended the same school as the suspect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/crime\/rex-heuermann-gilgo-beach-serial-killer-b2445374.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The Independent that he was a shy teenager who liked to leave romantic notes. According to Holpit, communicating with the alleged serial killer at the time did not cause any trouble. In her opinion, Heuermann could only be offended by being called a nerd at school. Neighbors described the suspect differently. While for some, he was a quiet family man, for others he was a recluse whose house the children avoided on Halloween.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New York architects respected Heuermann for his in-depth knowledge of the city\u2019s building codes, which helped him win approval for many projects. However, not all of his work was successful. In September 2007, the fire department declared a Harlem apartment building that he was hired to renovate unsafe and ordered two dozen families to evacuate. In addition, some clients and colleagues described the man as picky and arrogant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.queensyes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/ad_4nxf_knekl4pnwcwbaufudeezqumzmzk9yfv1xeh3upbnhobk3vweiwhhk93v1dlcmmztzzt30c9ecqerureosyrmfnvkrmpd4v1q4dvixyggyn_f3bldooo0mn20oanutyxu-shs-ec0bl__a1ybz1l-heskeyxac8aoxbqae7pcvpkwcfipf1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It also turned out that the architect had not paid his taxes for years and had repeatedly filed lawsuits, accusing drivers of causing him injuries in car accidents. In 2013, an American horror film about the crimes on Gilgo Beach was released, The Long Island Serial Killer. The film begins with the story that a serial killer is on the loose in New York. He kills prostitutes and throws their bodies on the beach of Long Island.
